The Principals


Marie Alafaci

Marie Alafaci has worked as an editor, publication consultant and corporate trainer. She has taught in the Diploma of Arts - Professional Writing and Editing course, been an event host at the Victorian Writers’ Centre and both a panellist and member of the advisory board for the Emerging Writers’ Festival.

While her book-length publications are in non-fiction (click here to see her most recent title), Marie has also had several humorous short stories published in the speculative fiction genre (fantasy, sci-fi, horror etc). She is also working on several picture story books, and reviews children’s books for Magpies Magazine.

Marie’s particular interests in critiquing are non-fiction and young adult fiction.

Emma Hegarty

Emma Hegarty has worked in the publishing industry as a publisher, production manager, copy-editor and desktop publisher. She has also been a writer and designer for a local newspaper, and a student media adviser and rights mediator in the TAFE system in Victoria and Queensland. She has tutored in publishing studies at a tertiary level, and has a broad range of writing credits from journalistic pieces in local newspapers to chapters in two books (one on Australian Rules football and the other on the history of book publishing in Australia).

Emma’s educational qualifications include a Masters degree in publishing, for which she analysed the demographics of bestsellers in Australian trade publishing and book-selling, and a Diploma in Professional Writing and Editing. Her research interests include Australian history, the publishing industry, and the South Pacific.
